Following the successful engagement with District Commissioners from the Eastern and Southern Regions earlier this week, the Mining and Minerals Regulatory Authority on Wednesday, 30th July 2025, continued with Sensitization and Consultation Meetings with all District Commissioners from the Central Region at Chikho Hotel in Mponela.
The meeting is part of MMRA’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness of the Mines and Minerals Act No. 25 of 2023 and to reinforce collaboration between the Authority and local government structures in the regulation and promotion of the mining sector in Malawi.
In his address, MMRA Director General, Mr. Samuel Sakhuta, reiterated the vital role of district councils in the implementation of the new Act. He emphasized MMRA’s commitment to working collaboratively with councils to uphold transparency, accountability, and sustainable development in the sector.
Today’s session welcomed additional stakeholders, with participation from civil society organizations including ActionAid and the Natural Resources Justice Network (NRJN. Their presence enriched the dialogue, bringing in diverse perspectives and reinforcing the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in the mining sector.
As with the earlier meeting, the session featured lively interactions, with District Commissioners and stakeholders sharing experiences, posing questions, and discussing practical solutions to challenges faced at the district level. The discussions were followed by a comprehensive presentation on the key provisions of the new Act and the mandate of MMRA.
MMRA is expected to continue with these consultative engagements across the country as it moves to ensure effective and inclusive implementation of the Mines and Minerals Act.
